2023 CSA Week #11 Update

Dave

Dear CSA members,

It’s hard to believe that there are only two weeks left in the summer share! Our hope is that you have been enjoying the summer’s fresh fruits and vegetables.

The CSA model is unique in that it establishes a relationship between you, the consumer and Miller Plant Farm staff and farmers. You trusted us to grow your food and paid us in advance for weekly shares of fresh, nutritious fruits and vegetables. Through this relationship we recognize that CSA members are our best customers. If we have disappointed you in any way, please let us know so improvements can be made.

This has been a strange growing season. I remember writing this year’s first update during a serious drought. Then the rains came in July just in time to save most of our crops. As I write this, we are again very dry. We are running our irrigation pumps day and night trying to keep up. Crops like sweet corn will take almost all the water you can give it. Irrigation is sufficient to bridge a time period when rain is scarce, however it is not like rain! There is something almost magical in rain. The sheer volume per acre when we receive an inch of rain is impressive. Each acre receives 27,154 gallons weighing 113 tons! So if you have a garden or a flower bed that measures 100 square feet (that’s not very big) that means to irrigate the equivalent of an inch of rain you would have to put on 62 gallons of water. It is much easier to let Mother Nature do it!

From Our Farm to Your Family,
Dave
