2023 CSA Week #6 Update

Brent

Dear CSA Shareholders,

As we roll into week #6 of the CSA program, I just wanted to make a brief note highlighting some behind the scenes work that may not be thought about which is important to the whole process of producing the food that ends up on your tables. We spent this week harvesting our wheat and rye. While you may wonder the importance of these crops to you, I would like to explain how they have many benefits to your vegetable shares. The first thing that comes to mind is crop rotation. We try to rotate our vegetable crops every 3-7 years depending on the crop. The second benefit is the straw. We currently straw our winter squash that makes it to your homes in the fall. Another importance of these crops is they help with erosion. The wheat and rye fields don’t wash out like your normal vegetable crops planted on raised bed plastic mulch. The raised beds act like a small stream on heavy rains and the rye and wheat fields help to break up the look of conventional tillage practices, which is what most of the vegetables are that we grow here at the farm.

I hope you enjoyed this short note as I believe this information may be of value to some of you. Hopefully, you enjoy the week #6 share offering, as we start to get into some new items as the summer rolls on.

Have a good week,
Brent Clever
